Lumecca® IPL

Experience the most advanced IPL treatment in the world at Athena Clinic Dubai. Lumecca ®,is one of the most powerful IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatments available on the market. It works by targeting the red and brown pigments in the skin (melanin and haemoglobin), which absorb the light energy and are destroyed, resulting in improved pigmentation, reduced redness of the face, and the elimination of thread veins.

IPL can be used to treat a broad range of skin concerns, such as freckles, sun damage, age spots, post-inflammatory pigmentation, rosacea, acne and acne scars, thread veins, and vascular lesions. It can be used on any part of the body, with the most frequent areas being the face, neck, hands, and chest. This device is suitable for skin types I-IV.

  • This is a quick and painless procedure with fast results. Sun damage and skin complexion start to improve within the first few days, and the skin continues to look younger and brighter over time, with the most visible results appearing at two weeks. Results may take a few sessions to be prominent, though most patients notice improvement with the first session. Vascular lesions may take up to two weeks to show results. Depending on the skin concern, three to six sessions are usually advised, with multiple photofacials improving the outcome for dull, damaged, and pigmented skin. Most patients do not experience any side effects, and any skin reaction, if present, resolves within a few hours. Patients may find their skin to be sensitive to sunlight immediately post-treatment, and direct sunlight should be avoided.

  • Prior to treatment, patients should avoid tanning and prolonged sun exposure for two weeks, and retinoids and exfoliants for one week. There is no recovery time required post-treatment, though patients treated for vascular lesions may experience bruising that can last up to a week.

  • There is no recovery time, however, patients treated for vascular lesions may experience bruising which can last up to a week. The only post-treatment usually required is limiting sun exposure and wearing sunscreen regularly for a couple of weeks.

FAQ on Lumecca® IPL treatments

  • Lumecca® is the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) laser on the market for treating pigmented and vascular lesions. It is often referred to as a Photofacial. After just one use, patients notice significant improvements in the complexion and clarity of the skin. It is the treatment of choice for treating red/brown spots and sun damage, as the IPL is attracted to colour, and can help get rid of freckles, age spots, Rosacea and facial veins.

  • The number of treatments needed varies from person to person, but usually 4-6 sessions are required for skin rejuvenation and pigmentation, and 6-8 sessions for hair removal treatment. However, Lumecca® being the most powerful IPL in the market does require much fewer sessions as compared to other systems. Even with one session of photofacial IPL rejuvenation, there are visible results with a fresher looking skin and visibly improved skin texture and colour!

  • While you may feel a slight tingling or pinch (similar to the snap of a rubber band) from the IPL hand piece, most people tolerate the procedure very well. Some areas of the body are more sensitive than others, and you may choose to have a topical anaesthetic applied to increase comfort during the procedure. Patients with thicker and darker pigment may feel the tingling sensation more. With a cooling gel and the powerful sapphire cooling tip of the IPL, this procedure is very comfortable with minimal redness post-session.

  • IPL is an excellent treatment to improve complexion and induce collagen production in the skin. Photo rejuvenation treatment with IPL, popularly known as Photofacial, is a quick and effective way to achieve a clear complexion and glow with minimal to no downtime. After a series of treatments, pores appear smaller, redness of the face is reduced, pigmentation is visibly less, and there is a significant improvement in the texture and appearance of the skin.

  • The results are usually visible 7-10 days after treatment. Full results can take up to 2 weeks. Since IPL stimulates collagen stimulation, incremental results are seen with every session and will continue for as long as 6 months after multiple sessions. For pigmented areas, you may notice a slight darkening of the treated areas for up to 3-5 days after treatment, followed by a visible improvement in the pigmentation. Pigmentation usually requires multiple sessions to see visible results. Sun damage can start showing visible improvement in as little as 1-2 sessions!

  • IPL can be done on Fitzpatrick skin type I-IV, loosely translating into Caucasian, olive skin, and fairer Asian population. That being said, in the hands of experts, it can be used on skin of colour by adjusting the parameters accordingly. IPL works by acting on pigment, so in very dark skin, or tanned skin (fake or real), IPL cannot be used. We do have options of skin rejuvenation and pigmentation for all skin types at Athena, and your dermatologist will be able to guide you as to what will be the best suited treatment for you.
