Dermal Fillers

We at Athena dermatology clinic focus on positive ageing. Achieve a naturally enhanced and refreshed look with dermal fillers from the hands of the very best in Dubai. Dermal Fillers are injectable substances made of hyaluronic acid, used to add volume to soft tissue in the face.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our skin, which acts as a hydrator. When injected, fillers containing HA draw up moisture and form a gel-like substance, plumping, volumizing and lifting the skin. Fillers are a reversible injection which can be dissolved if needed, and dissolve naturally over time, providing organic looking results. As skilled physicians, we can utilise the properties of different types of HA-containing fillers to enhance facial features such as cheeks, lips and jawline, or to add facial symmetry, restore natural volume and reduce signs of ageing. They can also be used to plump up wrinkles and smooth lines on the face and neck

  • This treatment usually takes a small amount of time and delivers instant results. Most fillers contain additional Lidocaine to make the procedure more comfortable, eliminating the need to additionally numb the area. However, topical numbing creams may be used in more sensitive areas such as lips. Results are seen right away and last months to years depending on the type of filler and the location. Even though fillers give nearly instant results, they take a few weeks to absorb all the moisture and fully settle, with any deep tissue swelling getting resolved as the filler gets completely assimilated. Lip fillers can sometimes lead to swollen lips which settle in 2-3 days. It is normal to have a few odd lumps or bumps which settle down as the swelling subsides. It is advised to wait 4-6 weeks before adding more filler to the treated area. This is a procedure with minimal downtime and side effects, if any, are mostly temporary. These may include swelling, bruising and mild soreness. As with any cosmetic procedure, there are risks, including vascular occlusion and infection.

  • Inform your doctor if you are on blood thinners, taking antioxidant supplements or green tea, as these may increase chances of bruising. Avoid alcohol 24 hours before procedure, and prophylaxis may be required to prevent cold sores in those who are predisposed. Please inform the doctor if you have permanent fillers in place.

  • You may experience soreness for a day or two post-filler. Do not massage the treated area. You may apply cold compress if needed. Avoid heat (steam, sauna, heavy exercise) for 48 hours, avoid pressure on treated areas (i.e. sleep on the back if possible for a few days). Do not use actives or makeup for 24 hours, and avoid facial treatments for 2 weeks after treatment. Please check with your physician before undergoing other facial treatments during this time.

FAQ on Dermal fillers

  • Simply put, Botox® is used to limit muscle movement, while fillers are used to build volume. Anti-wrinkle injections like Botox® reduce the activity of muscles in the face, softening wrinkles that are caused by facial expressions. Facial fillers are used to replace or enhance volume, which helps to plump and lift the skin.

  • Dermal Fillers are commonly used on the face, such as the nasolabial folds, smile lines, temples, to enhance or build the jawline. They can also be used to plump lips or enhance the cheekbones and give a lifted look to the face. They can be used for cheek volumizing to improve the definition of the face that is lost due to the ageing process. Deep wrinkles on the forehead, frown lines, neck lines, etc. can be improved with fillers. They can also be used in other parts of the body, such as the hands to rejuvenate and remove the signs of ageing, as well as the buttocks to enhance volume. Fillers can sometimes also be used in scars to improve their appearance.

  • Different types of fillers have specific properties which can be used for achieving different outcomes. At your consultation, we will discuss in detail to achieve a personalised treatment plan that suits your needs. The choice is usually based on the site being injected (e.g. the under-eye, lips, cheeks, jawline), the concern being treated (fine lines, volume replacement, scar improvement, defining lips, remodelling cheek or jaw line).

  • Different fillers last for different durations depending on their density. However, please note that the duration for which a filler lasts also depends on the area which is injected, as well as the patient's metabolism.

  • Filler results are noticeable almost right away. The best results are often observed after up to 2-4 weeks as the hyaluronic acid gel of the fillers absorbs water and hydrates and any swelling which might have happened begins to settle. Lips can often appear swollen for the first 3-5 days and results are visible after about a week, though they may take longer to completely settle.

  • Pain tolerance can vary from person to person. However, most fillers nowadays have lidocaine in them to make the procedure comfortable and usually no numbing cream is required. However, areas like lips may require a numbing cream for up to 30 minutes prior, as they can be a little more sensitive. We also often use a vibrating tool to distract from the injection and enhance the comfort of the patient.

  • Yes, one of the advantages of using non-permanent fillers is that they can be easily dissolved using the hyaluronidase enzyme if necessary.

  • Fillers are absolutely safe in the hands of a qualified medical professional. We only use FDA-approved products in our clinic. When injected in an adept fashion, most of the side effects can be avoided.

  • Ideally, all the fillers should be done at least a month before any major events for the results to be fully settled. It is best to avoid fillers at least 2 weeks before a major event to help any bruises that may occur to settle down in time.

  • In the right hands and with the right product and patient selection, fillers give a natural and subtle result. We at Athena truly believe in positive ageing – fillers are not meant to change your facial features, but to enhance them, leaving you looking fresh and glowing.

  • The cost of lip filler treatments in Dubai can vary greatly, so it can be difficult to choose the right option. It is important to remember that the quality of the product used, as well as the qualifications and training of the injector, are key factors in achieving a good result. Therefore, it is important to not just focus on the lowest price, but to also consider these important factors. For more information on the cost of lip filler injections, please contact the clinic.
